Claude Duval, by the way, really is the first example of the hedonistic, dashing highwayman and he really embodied Restoration values of like, sex and excess. He was incredibly good looking and though a thief, not incredibly violent like others of his trade. He wore the best clothes with the fanciest periwig. He dressed the part.

What makes him actually interesting/irresistible to me, though, is, as I said, his bizarre gallantry. There’s an anecdote in which he robbed a rich man and his wife taking their carriage across Hounslowe Heath. The very pretty wife, as she exited the carriage with pistols surrounding her, played music on an instrument she had with her to show she was not scared of Duval. He bowed and asked if she danced as well as she played music and then ask her husband if he could trouble him terribly to dance with her. And they did dance, a courante to be exact, and Duval and the young wife got so much pleasure from the dance that Duval said he would only take half of their loot. How kind! How gallant.

He also often robbed little trinkets off ladies, only to send the trinket back in scented letters a few days later, sealing his memory on them and making them excitable with passion. And it’s no surprise that when he was eventually arrested and sent to the gallows, the main people who came out to watch him die and mourn their dashing hero were the ladies, rich and poor. Even his grave epitaph says ‘If male, look to thy purse. If female, look to thy heart….Duvall, the ladies joy….Duvall, the ladies grief.’

  • She really wanted her two sons to be titled but it didn’t seem to be happening and Nell was jealous that all of the King’s other acknowledged children had been given titles. So, one day, Nell’s eldest son was playing in the gardens and Charles arrived to see him so Nell called for him with “Come here, you little bastard and greet your father!” Charles was obviously horrified and told her not to call her that. She said she had absolutely nothing else to call them since they were not titled. Charles replied with “God saved the Earl of Burford!” and so, he was titled. Nell’s younger son died before he could be titled and we know that Charles was in the process of getting a title for Nell, but he died too before it could come to pass.
  • She experimented with crossdressing between 1663-1667. Her alter-ego was called “William Nell” and it provided her with great inspiration for the male characters she would play on the stage later on.
  • She hated playing serious parts as her proclivity was for comedy, not tragedy. In fact, most agreed she could not do dramatic acting. One of the characters she played spoke in the epilogue of a play by Robert Howard and the lines were extremely accurate and Nell knew this and agreed: “We have been all ill-us’d by this day’s poet. T’is our joint cause: I know in your hearts that you hate serious plays as much as I hate serious parts!”
  • Nell caught the eye of the infamous Lord Buckhurst in her performance in The Mad Couple, particularly was there was a scene in which her character can only escape a hugely fat suitor able by rolling, and she rolled across the stage herself, her feet toward the audience and her petticoats flying about. A satire of this scene describes the effect it had on her audience, who loved her and found her irresistible: Yet Hart more manners had, then not to tender when noble Buckhurst beg’d him to surrender. He saw her roll the stage from side to side. And, through her drawers the powerful charm descry’d. (Hart was her previous lover, Charles Hart, who was on his way out in her affections).
  • Her coachman got into a fight with another man because said man had called Nell a whore and the coachman wanted to defend her honour. Nell said “Gentlemen, I am a whore. Find something else to fight about!”
  • Her rivalry with Louise de Kerouaille, Charles’ other main mistress during Nell’s tenure, is well documented. One day, Louise saw Nell dressed up really finely at court and said, with a sardonic undertone, “Nelly, you are grown rich, I believe, by your dress. Why, woman, you are fine enough to be a queen” to which Nell quipped, quickly and on the mark as always, “You are entirely right, madam, and I am whore enough to be a duchess” (Louise was Duchess of Portsmouth). 
  • Nell was also always at loggerheads with Charles’ other actress-mistress, Moll Davies, who was from a similar background to Nell. With the help of Aphra Behn, Nell put some laxatives in Moll Davies’ tea the afternoon before Moll was supposed to spend the night with Charles. They had the desired effect because Moll could not perform for obvious reasons and Nell spent the night with Charles instead.
  • She was buried in the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London (now the site of the National Portrait Gallery) in 1687. Her funeral was packed with people, who camped out in the streets to see her coffin go by. She was one of them after all. One of her final requests was for a sermon inspired by the Book of Luke to be preached at her funeral. The lines she specified were from Luke 15:7. They say “Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” Very apt.
  • Because of her background, she was very into philanthropy and helping those less fortunate than herself. She was the one who inspired Charles to set up the Royal Chelsea Hospital for Army Veterans and, though she was in considerable debt after her death, she had set aside a lot of money to donate to the prisoners at Newgate Gaol.

Hey peeps, just fyi, characters like Arya from Game of Thrones and Toph from Avatar are not “feminist characters” because they’re not feminine. Yeah great, they’re girls, but they are girls whose expressions and personalities indicate what is socially thought to be a masculine gender. It’s the same as back in ancient theatre, where only men played all the roles. Hiding a male-gendered person behind a pair of boobs isn’t furthering the feminist movement, it’s just telling women that being like men is the only way to be respected, and that any kind of femininity makes characters “boring” and “useless.” You know which characters are feminist characters? Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time, Katara from Avatar, Rose from Doctor Who, and Ianto Jones from Torchwood. Yep, Ianto is a very feminine character who plays the role of the perfect 50s housewife by cleaning up after the team and openly crying when he is upset. Those characters are feminine, and those characters tell people that you can be feminine without being weak, boring or useless.
